In my post a few weeks ago I wrote about getting free traffic to your site using StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon is a great source of free traffic and it takes very little work, but it is not the only method you should be trying. Once someone is taken to your site on StumbleUpon they may never return, even if they do give it the thumbs up. A way to build backlinks and a solid flow of continual traffic to your blog is through blog commenting.

There is a list of popular blogs that I like to comment on. I comment on these blogs for a few reasons.

  • I enjoy their content and like to leave feedback.
  • It’s a great way to build backlinks to my own blog for SEO purposes (although a lot of blogs no-follow your links).
  • It’s a great way to build targeted traffic to my blog.

I am not going to sit down and read through long articles on topics I do not care about and I doubt you would either. However, I enjoy the content on the blogs I frequently read and that’s why I frequently read them :)

I use a few different “names” when leaving comments on blogs. They are all terms that I hope to rank for. Although a good portion of WordPress blogs add a no-follow tag by default to the links in names left in comments, not all of them do. It’s a good way to get some backlinks to your blog without costing you a thing.

It’s a great way to get targeted traffic.

This is one of the top reasons people comment on blogs. Most of the blogs I read are affiliate marketing related. By posting a comment and using the name Affiliate Manager I getting a lot of traffic from people who see that link. These people are mostly affiliates and just the type of person I want reading my blog.

About a year ago I created a PHP script to generate a list of blog posts that I might be interested in reading and commenting on. I have been tweaking the script over the past year and using it quite a bit. Last week I decided that I should share the script with everyone. So, I created Find Blog Posts.

Find Blog Posts allows you to enter a keyword and it generates a list of blog posts on WordPress blogs related to that keyword. For example, make money online blog posts.

It’s a very simple tool. The amount of results returned depends on the topic/keyword, but can be anywhere from 1-1,000 URLs.

Every web developer loves free traffic. There are quite a few different wants to generate free traffic to your site, but one of the most popular is through social media. There are millions of advertisements tweeted on Twitter and posted on Facebook accounts every single day. These mediums are a good way to generate traffic, but you do not want to look like you’re simply spamming to get traffic to your site. So, what’s another way?

StumbleUpon has been around since about 2001, so it’s not exactly new. However, it has been getting a lot of attention lately and has been amassing quite a bit of traffic. Users on StumbleUpon (you?) are now stumbling over 1 billion pages a month.

What is StumbleUpon?

The concept behind StumbleUpon is pretty easy. You install a toolbar on your browser and create a profile of interests. StumbleUpon then finds websites that it thinks you will like based on those interests. As you stumble through sites you can give them the thumb up or thumb down, depending whether you think the information on the page is interesting or not and StumbleUpon keeps track of that information and it helps the system choose sites you should like. I’ve been using StumbleUpon on and off for about five years now and it is pretty good at finding things that interest me.

Generate free traffic to your site

It’s pretty easy to see how you might be able to game the system to generate some free traffic to your site. Simply go to your site in your browser and stumble it. When you stumble something or give it the thumb up then StumbleUpon will show that site to other people who might be interested in seeing your content, thus generating some free traffic for you. If your site content is really interesting you will continue to see free traffic from stumblers. I have had single pages of my old sites stumbled by over 50,000 people!

You can also buy advertising at StumbleUpon. They have recently re-branded their StumbleUpon Ads to StumbleUpon Paid Discovery. With StumbleUpon Paid Discovery you can get some pretty targeted traffic for as low as $0.05 visitor, which is a pretty good price. Plus, if the stumbler you’re paying for gives your page the thumb up you will start seeing free traffic from that stumble, which can drive down your cost per visitor as well. I plan on doing a case study with StumbleUpon Paid Discovery soon :)
