7Search and Prosper202 Optimization Case Study

Profitable 7Search Campaign Case Study

My name is Christian Little and Luke asked if I would mind putting together this posting for you on how I have been promoting PeerFly offers with 7Search. I am going to show you some stats, some results that I have gotten, and hopefully this will help a few aspiring newbies out there. What I am going to show you will not make you rich, but it will get you going in the right direction.

I think I should preface this by saying I am not a super affiliate or anywhere close to it. I do affiliate marketing casually on the side. I have a full time job and a family that take priority over it. So, what I do is a little different than what other people might tell you to do.

There are two elements I consider to be vital if you are going to be even remotely successful when promoting anything online: Tracking and Testing.

For tracking, I strongly suggest you install Prosper202 somewhere and get very familiar with it. It is a free tracking platform that was built for affiliate marketers and it works extremely well in helping you track the results of everything you do.

For testing, you need to constantly test new ideas, new landing pages, new ad copy, and so on. There are several reasons for this, but the main one is that you might find that making a small change to your landing pages will result in a huge jump in conversions (and thus more money to you).

That being said, let me show you what you can do with 7Search, Prosper202, and PeerFly. I will be referring to Prosper202 as P202 for the rest of this posting.

Tracking With Prosper202

First off, you need to make sure that P202 is receiving data from PeerFly. This is called a Postback (they send some information to P202 when you get a conversion). What you need to do is get the Postback URL from P202 via the Setup tab, and modify it slightly so you are using PeerFly’s code for the commission amount and the subid1 variable.

To get the postback URL from P202, click on the Setup tab, then on Get Postback/Pixel. It gives you a few options, but use the Simple Global Post Back URL option, here is what it looks like:

Prosper202 global postback 7Search and Prosper202 Optimization Case Study

Then you simply login to PeerFly and put the code into the Global Postback page so it looks something like this:

global postback peerfly 7Search and Prosper202 Optimization Case Study

Now whenever you send a click through P202 to any offer in PeerFly and it converts, PeerFly will automatically send some data to you. When combined with the data that you have in P202 from when you sent the visitor through, you can get some very impressive stats.

I am not going to cover how to use P202 in this posting, Luke wanted me to show some of the results I am getting and how I analyze the data, so we are going to move onto how to analyze the results in P202 as that is what I do a lot.

The other key item here to make sure this works properly is to make sure you are passing your P202 subid to PeerFly with every offer into the s1 variable. Otherwise, if you get a conversion, PeerFly will send back the data they have to you but it will not match up because you are not specifying a subid.

A subid in P202 is basically a unique identifier for every individual visitor that you send through. It is critical that you have this mapped properly to the s1 variable unless you want to get a bit more advanced which is not really necessary.

When you add a specific offer from PeerFly into P202 you do it as a Campaign. You enter some basic information and your link that Peerfly gives you, but you have to modify it slightly to pass in the subid variable as the s1 variable to PeerFly. Once you do that, it will map correctly and PeerFly can correctly postback to you.

Here is an example of what it looks like when you set it up:

Example of Using 7Search, Prosper202, and PeerFly

That’s enough of the basics for now. I want to show you a campaign I had running to promote some offers and I will show you data from 7Search, P202, and PeerFly so you can see how it all works together once you have it setup and running properly.

This campaign ran from Tuesday January 29, 2013 until Monday February 4, 2013 (7 days total).

Here are the stats from 7Search for that period for the campaign:

7search campaign stats 7Search and Prosper202 Optimization Case Study

Because 7Search is a pay-per-click network (which is what I focus on, I do not get involved with CPM advertising as a general rule) the two numbers I care about the most are Clicks and Cost. You can see that 7Search sent me 3,367 clicks for a total of $33.67.

Now let’s take a look at the results for that time period. This is from P202 for this specific campaign:

p202results 7Search and Prosper202 Optimization Case Study

The [No Campaign] line is because I was using landing pages for my test. So, what this report is showing you that I got 3118 clicks tracked, of those 272 clicked through my landing page and 9 converted on Just Hook Up. A further 149 clicked through and went to xxxBlackBook but did not convert.

Now some of the numbers in P202 do not necessarily agree with what 7Search is stating. This is due to numerous reasons, mostly technical stuff about duplicated clicks and such. It is not a big deal in this case, but if you ever see a huge discrepancy in what your ad network is claiming and what you are seeing then you need to call them up and figure out what is going on.

So in short I spent $33.67 at 7Search, but earned $42.75.

Since I had a successful campaign running, the next trick is to optimize it to make it more profitable and there are several ways to do it. Next I am going to show how to do a few basic optimization tactics using all that click data from P202.

Landing Page Optimization

The first thing I look over when trying to optimize a campaign is my landing pages. At the time of this campaign, I had 5 different landing pages running. Here are the stats during this time period:

Landing Page Optimzation Prosper202 7Search 7Search and Prosper202 Optimization Case Study

Now just using that information, you can see that only three of my landing pages managed to generate any conversions during the test period.

#2 and #5 did not generate a single conversion, but #4 did with the same amount of traffic being directed to it. That tells me that either #4 was significantly better or #2 and #5 were significantly worse. Either way, #2 and #5 could be removed from the rotation at this point (which I did when I initially reviewed the data).

Furthermore, you can see that while #1 got the most leads, it also had way more people sent to it (because it was the first lander I built and it ran solo for a while). But if you look at the click-through rate and the signup rate, you can see that it significantly under-performs when compared to #4 and #3. So at this point I took #1 out of the rotation, leaving just #3 and #4 running.

That leaves #3 and #4 being the only landing pages left running at this point because they showed the best results. I then took those landing pages and started testing variations of them and I’m happy to say after this initial campaign I got them up to 25-30% click-through rates on both.

Day-Parting Optimization

The next step that I do when optimizing campaigns is to look at the day parting report in P202 for the campaign. It is found in the Overview tab and here is the data for this campaign:

prosper202 day parting optimization 7Search and Prosper202 Optimization Case Study

This report shows you the hours of the day that you got the clicks and what the performance was. It does not take a genius to see that all my conversions happened in the afternoon and evenings (which makes sense as I was promoting dating offers).

Something you may not know is that 7Search has a Campaign Scheduler feature which lets you set the hours of the day that you campaigns will run. You have to call them up and ask them to activate it, but once you get it turned on it can be very useful when you combine it with P202. Here is what it looks like after I did a lot of testing with this campaign (Green means the campaign is running during that time):

7search day parting 7Search and Prosper202 Optimization Case Study

The key advantage here is that 7Search will by default try to spread your clicks out throughout the day. But when you set specific hours it can run, you get way more clicks during those specific times which leads to more conversions.

Now, I think I should point out that P202 has another useful report called Week Parting which shows the same information but it is for the days of the week instead of hours of the day. I did not use the report much during this initial campaign, but it is something I strongly recommend doing as a further step.

Referral-Based Optimization

The last optimization tactic I am going to cover today is referral-based optimization. Basically looking at where all these clicks are coming from and blacklisting the bad ones.

You can use the Group Breakdown report in P202 (assuming you are passing along the AFFID and RID variables from 7Search) to identify the specific members of 7Search who are sending you traffic. Here is an example:

referral based optization 7search 7Search and Prosper202 Optimization Case Study What you want to look for is somebody who sent a lot of clicks but none of them converted, here is an example:

prosper202 referrals 7Search and Prosper202 Optimization Case Study

I found a few affiliates in their network like this that I blocked by blacklisting on 7Search. Only block affiliates that send you a good number of clicks that do not convert (i.e. 100+ clicks with no conversions).

That is all I have for now. As a recap, here are some of the key areas you can quickly and easily optimize by learning P202 and using it properly:

  • Landing Pages
  • Hour of Day / Day of Week
  • Specific Referrals Within Ad Networks

There are several other ways to look at the data, but this is an extremely long post already so I will leave it at this for now. Feel free to comment if you have any questions.

Traffic Sources Based On Experience

Traffic Source based on Experience

There are a ton of different traffic sources out there you can run your affiliate marketing campaigns on and one of the easiest things you can do is completely overwhelm yourself by trying to run campaigns at all of them at the same time. I think it’s really important that you choose a traffic source, test a spread of campaigns on that traffic source, optimize your campaigns, and then scale until you hit a ceiling. If you simply setup campaigns on a bunch of different traffic sources all at once you are going to spread yourself too thin. So, what traffic sources do I suggest focusing on based on your experience as an affiliate marketer?

I’ve broken down your possible experience level into four different levels. Those levels are Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior. Here is an explanation of each level and one traffic source I suggest based on that level. Remember, these are simply my suggestions based on my experiences working with my publishers. You should look into different traffic sources on your own, but these are the ones I suggest.

Freshmen (“Newbie”)

There is a pretty large learning curve when you first start affiliate marketing. You will lose money at first and I think it is important that you learn as much as you can while losing as little as possible, which I am sure most people would agree with. The main concepts with any affiliate campaign are setting up, optimizing, and scaling. The traffic source that I think makes this the easiest and has the lowest barrier of entry is 7Search.

Setting up a 7Search campaign is really simple and the minimum deposit to get started is just $25. They have a great keyword tool that makes it easy to find keywords that you can get traffic from. By starting out using a search PPC ad network you are assuring you will get traffic to your affiliate links no matter what (well, as long as you’re spending money). Also, 7Search has a cool feature that will let you blacklist bad performing sources so you can optimize your campaign.

If you’re brand new to affiliate marketing I suggest “getting your feet wet” with 7Search. Once you have some experience setting up a campaign and you have a few profitable 7Search campaigns running then I suggest you give Plenty of Fish Ads a try.

Sophomore

Two of the most “affiliate friendly” ad networks are 7Search and Plenty of Fish (POF). One of the main reasons I like to use both of them is that you can easily create a campaign by direct linking using your affiliate link. Most traffic sources are getting strict and disapproving direct affiliate links, but 7Search and POF welcome them. So, within a few minutes you can have some traffic going to your affiliate link.

With POF Ads you are advertising on the Plenty of Fish dating website. They have millions of users from throughout the world. Before you get started advertising, I suggest signing up at POF.com and taking a look around. You will see banner advertisements throughout the website. By far, the best offers to promote on Plenty of Fish are dating campaigns. Once you’ve taken a look through POF you can sign up for their advertising service at ads.pof.com.

POF Campaign Articles

Plenty of Fish ads use banners to drive traffic to your links. You bid on that traffic using a CPM model. Basically, with CPM you are bidding per 1,000 impressions. It’s a bit different than the PPC model 7Search has, but it’s easy to get the hang of. You want to aim for a 0.1% CTR or as close to it as you can get it. At a 0.1% CTR your CPM bid is essentially a CPC bid.

You can get quite a bit more traffic from POF than 7Search and the quality of the traffic seems to be much better. You can scale your campaigns bigger and make more money as well. POF is a great traffic source for a moderately experienced affiliate marketer. Once you have a grasp of the CPM bidding platform and have some successful POF campaigns going I would suggest doing some research on PPV traffic.

Junior

One type of traffic that I have seen great results with for years now is PPV traffic and the source that I have seen the most consistent results with is LeadImpact. LeadImpact is a PPV network that serves ads through pop ups which are displayed to users who install their adware. I have more information on how PPV works in my LeadImpact review. The reason I like LeadImpact over similar networks is that they are pretty quick to respond to questions, have a moderate minimum deposit, decent traffic volume, and pretty good quality. You can get their traffic to convert and it’s easy to scale not only on LeadImpact, but by copying your campaign over to other PPV networks you can get extra traffic that way as well.

PPV traffic is fun to work with and can be very profitable if done right. You’re paying for every single view and your CPM will end up being a lot more than what you’d pay on POF, but you’re guaranteeing yourself “clicks” and with a good offer or landing page, you can see a great ROI.

Senior (“Super Affiliate”)

If you have mastered the methods listed above then I suggest making way to into the king of traffic, media buying. I have discussed media buying before and although I do not have a lot of experience with it myself, I have helped guide my publishers into producing some very successful media buy campaigns. You can do your own media buy on basically any website, but the network that I suggest for running your initial campaigns through is SiteScout. The minimum deposit to get started is just $500 and they have a very large inventory of websites you can run traffic on using a ton of different banner placements. If you’re at this stage of your affiliate marketing career you should already have done some research on media buying, but I suggest signing up at SiteScout and giving it a try!

Based on your experience in affiliate marketing, those 4 different traffic sources should help get you driving some traffic you will be comfortable with. Each traffic source is a different “traffic method” for the most part. 7Search is Search PPC, POF is considered Social or Banner Display traffic, LeadImpact is PPV or Pop Ups, and SiteScout is specifically Banner Display. Being able to work with a range of traffic sources and methods is what is going to allow you to make the most money possible and the ability to do that is completely dependent on your experience.

So, setup some campaigns, run some traffic, and let’s make some money!

Control 7Search Traffic Quality
The following is a guest post by Chad Howarth. Chad is a bad man. Bad as in good, of course. He has studied internet marketing since 1997, and he is proficient in turning those wayward entrepreneurial spirits (whiners) into winners. If you like Chad’s style and want more tips for improving your PPC/CPA campaigns, he has a whole lot more to say at http://chadhowarth.com.

OK, stop me if you’ve heard any of these before:

7Search is a SCAM!
All 7Search does is send me bot traffic!
I’m out of baby powder and my whine-lines are chafing!

Yeah? You’ve heard all those? Me too. Enough times to choke NASA and what’s more is, I have heard similar such complaining about every paid traffic source in the known universe. Now, why do you suppose this is? I’ll tell you why. It is because people want cheap traffic and who can blame them? I want cheap traffic. But do I expect quality traffic for a penny a click?

NO!

Now a lot of the “tips” out there about setting up 7Search campaigns go something like this: “Hey! Go to ABC keyword tool, cut and paste yourself ’bout 5000 hyper-targeted super keywords, and then bid a penny for ‘em. Now just saddle up your make-money pony and git some!”

That’s right, you can safely ignore any advice of this nature. It is this type of advice that is responsible for the growing armada of 7Search haters. These guys are mad, and they aren’t shy about it and I feel bad for them. I feel bad because I am getting conversions, I am controlling my traffic, and I am profitable. I feel bad because I am bidding MORE THAN A PENNY. Wouldn’t these things just make you feel awful too?

How’s This for a Tip:

IMAGE1 550x567 Control Your 7Search Traffic Quality or Die

BAM! I will bet you your grandmother’s article submitter that no one is paying $6 a click for bot traffic. Now how did I find these gems? Well that’s easy, and this click is on me:

7Search 500 Top Paying Keywords

This is a script that updates real-time to reflect the top keyword bids. Check back often, but please don’t misunderstand, I don’t expect you to start out a new campaign with $6 bids. That would be what I like to call STUPID. But it does beg the question:

What do I do with this Top 500 list?

Man, I’m glad you asked. This is the part where I share a little secret with you. There are no iPhone or iPad keywords in this list. Hmm! But guess what, every CPA noob does the first time he/she goes to promote an offer? “Wow! Free iPhone/iPad offer?? Who wouldn’t go for that? Easy money!”

Sorry noob, you’ve got another thing coming and it’s not early retirement. Let me advise you, nay, let me implore you not to start your CPA career by getting excited about one shiny CPA offer. Absolutely familiarize yourself with the offers that are available to you, but do NOT get your heart set on one, not yet.

Also, forget about the aforementioned ABC keyword tool. You are using 7Search traffic, use the 7Search Keyword Suggestion Tool. Duh.

And forget about loading up hundreds of keywords. That is just silly. Dozens maybe, but not hundreds. I’m dead serious about that. Check out this cleverly masked screen shot of my most profitable 7Search campaign:

IMAGE2 550x402 Control Your 7Search Traffic Quality or Die

See that? 39 keywords. And guess what? No penny bids. I’m above a dime on a couple of these and I have the clicks and impressions to show for it. Bear in mind that this represents a single week of data.

Now why all this talk about keywords when I started this conversation with talk about traffic quality? Well, because 7Search is a 2nd tier PPC network and their reach does not extend into all markets like you’ll see with Google or AdCenter. You have to know which markets work with 7Search, and which ones don’t. That is where the Top 500 list comes into play.

If you’re in some off-beat market, 7Search still wants to sell you clicks and they will find them for you, and they’ll even let them go for real cheap, but you won’t like it. You’ll enlist in the hater armada when your penny clicks don’t convert, and you’ll boohoo all the way to your favorite internet marketing forum.

Simply put, if you’re getting significant impressions and clicks for a penny you may be playing in a market that 7Search has a weak presence in. Use keyword research to evaluate the quality of traffic 7Search can provide in any given niche. When you see higher bids, it is reasonable to assume higher quality traffic. You don’t have to outbid everyone, you just have to be in the ballpark. And last but not least…

Fit Your Offers to the Traffic, Not the Other Way Around, C’est La Vie.

Cheap 7Search Keyword List

cheap 7search keywords

Last week I sent out an email to the members of my newsletter, Affiliate Manager Exclusive, with a list of the top 1,000 keywords on 7Search with bids at $0.05 or lower. I also included a note that if they emailed me back requesting it, I have a list of the top 10,000 keywords with bids at $0.05 or lower. I sent that list to over 200 people! Well, I’ve decided to release the list publicly.

This list was generated by 7Search and given me to be exclusively. It’s been out since April 2nd and I’m sure some of the keywords at the top now have bids much higher than $0.05, but it’s definitely still worth looking through. There are some really great keywords hidden throughout the list. These keywords have good volume (the list is sorted by monthly clicks) and it’s cheap traffic. You can find the two lists at:

If you are still not advertising on 7Search I suggest you take a look through these articles:

I have discussed 7Search quite a bit lately and my publishers are seeing pretty good results with their 7Search campaigns. A lot of affiliates on WarriorForum and CPAFix are talking about their successful campaigns and that’s very encouraging. I’ve even had a few people email me that they have gotten their first conversions ever from following my 7Search posts!

As you look through those posts you’ll see I’ve pretty much covered everything 7Search. Now, it’s time to build some campaigns and make some money :) Pick out a few of the keywords from the lists linked to above, setup a few campaigns, optimize those campaigns, and then scale by creating more.

I will be updating the lists above as frequently as possible (as long as 7Search will continue to provide me with updated lists). I am hoping to get an updated list at least once every other month.

Let me know if you have any questions or need any help setting up your campaigns.
